How to Install MPV Player via PPA in Ubuntu:

The MPV website refers to 2 third party PPAs for easily installing MPV player in Ubuntu 14.04, Ubuntu 16.04, and higher, though both are not updated for MPV 0.27 at the moment of writing.

1. Open terminal via Ctrl+Alt+T or by searching for “Terminal” from your application launcher. When it opens, run commands o add either PPA:

  • add Doug McMahon’s PPA for FFmpeg version:

    sudo add-apt-repository ppa:mc3man/mpv-tests

    mpv-ppa-ffmpeg

  • or add another PPA with VapourSynth support:

    sudo add-apt-repository ppa:djcj/vapoursynth

    mpv-ppa-vapoursynth

Input your password (no visual feedback while typing) when it prompts and hit Enter.

2. After added either PPA repository, check updates and install MPV player via commands:

sudo apt-get update

sudo apt-get install mpv

Uninstall:

Launch Software & Updates utility and remove the PPAs by going to “Other Software” tab.

To remove MPV player, either use your system package manager or run command:

sudo apt-get remove --autoremove mpv
