SMPlayer, an open-source graphical front-end for Mplayer and MPV, reached the 17.10.2 release earlier today.
SMPlayer 17.10.2 is a small release with some performance improvements. Changes in the release include:
- New option in Preferences -> Network to select the preferred quality for streaming sites
- The audio equalizer is now disabled by default on Linux to prevent a no sound problem for users with old versions of mpv.
- Fix some problems with the letterbox filter.
- The HDPI support is now also enabled on the portable package for Windows.
- Fix subtitles not disappearing when using the letterbox filter with mplayer.
- The qt5 build now correctly displays the time in the thumbnail generator pictures.
How to Install SMPlayer 17.10.2 in Ubuntu:
The rvm’s PPA contains the latest SMPlayer packages for Ubuntu 14.04, Ubuntu 16.04, Ubuntu 17.04, Ubuntu 17.10, and their derivatives.
1. Open terminal from application launcher. And run command to add the PPA:
sudo add-apt-repository ppa:rvm/smplayer
Input your password (no visual feedback while typing) when it prompts and hit Enter.
2. After that you are able to upgrade the media player via Software Updater:
or install SMPlayer for the first time via commands:
sudo apt-get update
sudo apt-get install smplayer smtube smplayer-themes smplayer-skins
Uninstall:
The PPA can be removed or disabled via Software & Updates utility under Other Software tab.
To remove SMPlayer, either use system package manager or run command:
sudo apt-get remove --autoremove smplayer smtube smplayer-*
