Krita 4.1 Released with Great New Features (How to Install)

A new stable series of the digital painting software Krita 4.1 was released today with exciting new features.

Krita 4.1 features:

  • A new reference images tool that replaces the old reference images docker.
  • You can now save and load sessions: the set of images and views on images you were working on
  • You can create multi-monitor workspace layouts
  • An improved workflow for working with animation frames
  • An improved animation timeline display
  • Krita can now handle larger animation by buffering rendered frames to disk
  • The color picker now has a mixing option
  • Improved vanishing point assistant — and assistants can be painted with custom colors
  • Krita’s scripting module can now be built with Python 2
  • performance improvements for brush masks

And there are a lot of bug fixes, performance improvements, and other more features. See the release note for details.

Download / Install Krita 4.1 in Ubuntu:

Appimage:

The appimage, single executable file to run the software, for 64-bit Linux is available for download at the link below:

Download Krita (.appimage)

Just grab the krita-4.1.0-x86_64.appimage, then:

  1. right-click the appimage and go to its Properties dialog.
  2. On Permissions tab, check the box says ‘Allow executing file as program
  3. Finally click Run the appimage to launch Krita 4.1.0.

Krita PPA:

The 4.1 release will be soon made into Krita Lime PPA for Ubuntu 18.04.

Open terminal (either via Ctrl+Alt+T or searching for it from app launcher) and run command to add the PPA:

sudo add-apt-repository ppa:kritalime/ppa

Type your password (no asterisks feedback while typing) when it prompts and hit Enter to continue.

Once the PPA published the new packages, you can upgrade Krita via Software Updater, or install the digital painting software via command:

sudo apt-get update

sudo apt-get install krita

Uninstall:

You can remove Ubuntu PPAs by launching Software & Updates and navigating to Other Software tab.

To remove Krita, either use your system package manager or run command in terminal:

sudo apt-get remove --autoremove krita
