Plex organizes all of your personal media so you can easily access and enjoy it through a web UI over the network. Or install Plex apps on your favorite mobile and streaming devices, gaming consoles, or smart TVs and get access to your media wherever you are.

1. For Ubuntu 14.04 and Ubuntu 16.04, you may first install the snapd daemon via command (open terminal via Ctrl+Alt+T):

sudo apt-get install snapd

2. Then install Plex media server snap app via either Ubuntu Software or command:

sudo snap install plexmediaserver --classic

Input your password (no visual feedback while typing) and hit Enter

install plex media server snap

The service starts automatically after installation with root user, so you won’t boring with the permission issue. And the “–classic” flag in the command allows the server access media files outside snap home directory.

Next open a web browser at http://localhost:32401, sign up and start indexing and sorting your media files for easy access:

While the browser only work for snapd directory, you can simply type in path/to/media when adding your media directory.

To remove Plex media server snap app, simply run command in terminal:

sudo snap remove plexmediaserver
