Install Animated GIF Recorder ‘Peek’ in Ubuntu 16.04 & Higher



Peek is a simple GTK3 animated GIF screen recorder for Linux. With it, you can easily select and adjust screen area you want to record and record it into GIF, WebM, and MP4.

The software uses FFmpeg and ImageMagick and runs on X11 or inside a GNOME Shell Wayland session using XWayland. Support for more Wayland desktops or Ubuntu Mir might be added in the future

How to Install Peek screen recorder in Ubuntu / Linux Mint:

Peek developer offers a stable PPA with the latest packages for Ubuntu 16.04, Ubuntu 16.10, Ubuntu 17.04, and Linux Mint 18.

You can follow the steps below to add the PPA and install Peek:

1. Open terminal by pressing Ctrl+Alt+T or searching for “terminal” from start menu. When it opens, run command:

sudo add-apt-repository ppa:peek-developers/stable

Type in your password (no visual feedback) and hit Enter.

2. After adding the PPA, you can install peek via either Synaptic Package Manager or by running command:

sudo apt update && sudo apt install peek

With the PPA, when a future release is out simple launch Software Updater to upgrade it along with system updates.

For those who don’t want to add PPA, grab the .DEB package from HERE.


You can remove the peek animated GIF recorder by either Synaptic Package Manager or running command:

sudo apt remove peek && sudo apt autoremove

The PPA can be removed by going to System Settings -> Software & Updates -> Other Software tab.
