[How to Upgrade] Mozilla Firefox 47 Released

Mozilla Firefox web browser has recently reached the 47.0 release, available for upgrade in Ubuntu 16.04, Ubuntu 14.04, Ubuntu 12.04, and Ubuntu 15.10.

New Features in Firefox 47.0:

  • Support for Google’s Widevine CDM on Windows and Mac OS X.
  • Enable VP9 video codec for users with fast machines.
  • Embedded YouTube videos now play with HTML5 video if Flash is not installed.
  • View and search open tabs from your smartphone or another computer in a sidebar.
  • Allow no-cache on back/forward navigations for https resources.
  • Latgalu [ltg] locale added.

The new release also brings various security fixes, removes the Firefox User Extension Library and click-to-activate plugin whitelist. See the Firefox 47.0 release note for details.

How to upgrade to Firefox 47 in Ubuntu:

The new release has been made into Ubuntu updates/security repositories for all current Ubuntu releases. Just launch Software Updater, and you’ll see Firefox 47 in the list after checking for updates:

upgrade firefox

Don’t see it? Go to System Settings -> Software & Updates -> Updates and make sure the first two check-boxes are checked under “Install updates from”.
