TV-Browser, a free and open-source digital TV guide software, has reached the 4.0 release a few days ago. Here’s how to install it in Ubuntu 16.04, Ubuntu 17.04, Linux Mint 18.x and derivatives.

TV-Browser is a Java program that gets the daily TV program (more than 1000 channels) from the internet and shows it clearly aranged – like a printed TV guide. An internet connection is only necessary during the data update. Note that you can not use TV-Browser to watch TV.

TV-Browser 4 was released one year later since the last stable release, it was announced:

Due to many suggestions for improvement and the intensive work of the tester, we can present the newest TV-Browser to you. TV-Browser 4 contains many improvements like the new Reminder dialog or the highlighting of the channel column in the program table, when a channel was selected. Bugs were fixed also, so TV-Browser should be more stable than ever.

TV-Browser 4 now need a Java 8 runtime environment, but that also means that TV-Browser now uses the new functions of Java 8, which make TV-Browser 4, even though it has more features, smaller than the previous version.
