GIMP, an open-source image editor, is a best Linux alternative to Adobe Photoshop. GIMP is available in Ubuntu Software Center, but Canonical doesn’t provide future updates for the software.

If you want the latest version of GIMP and always keep it up-to-date, you have to add a PPA repository in your system and below is how-to:

1. Open terminal from the Dash, Application, or by pressing Ctrl+Alt+T on keyboard. When it opens, run below command to add PPA:

sudo add-apt-repository -y ppa:otto-kesselgulasch/gimp

GIMP PPA

So far, Ubuntu 12.04, Ubuntu 14.04, Ubuntu 14.10, and Linux Mint 13/17 are supported.

Thanks to otto-kesselgulasch, the guy promises to maintain the PPA with most recent packages as long as he lives.

2. After adding the PPA, open Software Updater (or Updater Manager) and you’ll receive GIMP updates afte checking for updates once a new version is out:

upgrade-gimp

Or search for GIMP and install it in Ubuntu Software Center for the first time.
