How to Install Slack for Linux Client in Ubuntu 16.04

This quick tutorial is going to show you how to install the Slack Linux desktop app in Ubuntu 16.04 LTS.

The official Slack client for Linux:

Slack recently provides official client for Linux. It’s still in beta but offers all the features that you would expect from the native client.

To install it, simply download the package from the link below:

Then click install via Ubuntu Software.

ScudCloud – Unofficial open-source Slack client:

While the official client is a closed source software and still in beta, you may choose ScudCloud (see top picture), an open-source Linux client app that features:

• multiple teams support
• native system notifications
• count of unread direct mentions at launcher/sytray icon
• alert/wobbling on new messages
• channels quicklist (Unity only)
• optional tray notifications and “Close to Tray”

It can be installed from PPA by running the 4 commands below one by one terminal (Ctrl+Alt+T):

sudo apt-add-repository -y ppa:rael-gc/scudcloud

echo ttf-mscorefonts-installer msttcorefonts/accepted-mscorefonts-eula select true | sudo debconf-set-selections

sudo apt update

sudo apt install scudcloud

Works on Ubuntu 16.04, Ubuntu 15.04, Ubuntu 14.04, Linux Mint 17/18, and derivatives.

(Optional) To remove ScudCloud, use your package manager or run the command:

sudo apt remove scudcloud && sudo apt autoremove

And the PPA can be removed via Software & Updates utility from Other Software tab.
